Buying & setup guides

A useful security camera has to do more than produce an attractive live picture. It must cover the area you care about, record the relevant moment, keep that recording long enough and let you retrieve it. Start with those jobs before comparing resolution or a long list of app features.

Start with the scene and the recording you need

Write down what each camera is supposed to show: a person approaching a door, activity beside a parked vehicle, a delivery at a gate or a broad view of a workshop. A wide overview and a close view of a distant entrance are different assignments. Sketch the camera position, the nearest obstruction and the distance to the area of interest. Then check whether the proposed lens and mounting position suit that scene.

Look at the same location after dark. Note porch lights, headlights, reflective walls, windows and places where a person could stand in shadow. A higher resolution label does not establish that the recording will show the detail you want under those conditions. Useful sample footage should disclose the camera, settings, subject distance and lighting.

Choose power and connectivity together

Separate the two questions: how does the camera receive power, and how does its video reach the recorder or app? A Wi-Fi camera can still need a power cable. A battery camera can have different recording behavior from a continuously powered model. A PoE installation needs suitable network equipment as well as a workable cable route.

For each position, list available outlets, network coverage and a realistic installation path. Include the garage, gate or outbuilding in that plan instead of assuming that a connection working inside the house will work at the final mounting point. If your aim is unattended recording, decide what must happen when the internet, router or mains power is unavailable.

Read “no subscription” feature by feature

The question is not simply whether a camera turns on without a plan. Check live viewing, local recording, recorded-event playback, person or vehicle alerts, remote playback and clip export individually. Also check whether a hub, memory card or recorder is required. Those components belong in the equipment budget.

Offline behavior needs equally careful wording. Wyze’s support guidance, for example, describes supported cameras continuing scheduled microSD recording offline after setup, while identifying models that cannot record that way. Continued local recording does not by itself establish that remote alerts or playback will work during the same outage.

Decide between continuous recording and event clips

Continuous recording is appropriate when you want to inspect what happened between detected events. Event recording can reduce the amount of material to review, but you should understand triggering, clip length, any gaps and whether the recording includes activity before the trigger. Check the exact model and mode rather than applying one brand-level claim to every camera.

For a comparison, write a simple sentence describing the required result: “I need to review any moment at this entrance during the previous week.” That is more useful than choosing a camera because its listing mentions motion detection.

Check the entire recorder combination

When adding a camera to an existing NVR or software recorder, verify both product models and the relevant firmware. Check the supported video streams, resolution, codec, audio and event features. ONVIF’s conformant-product database ties conformance to specific products and firmware or software versions. An ONVIF label should start a compatibility check; it should not replace one.

For a new system, count channels and network ports, then check the recorder’s recording limits and the available PoE power. Axis’s system-planning documentation treats storage, channels, bandwidth, licenses and power as separate project requirements. That is a useful checklist even when you are considering a different manufacturer.

Budget storage from the recording settings

Storage depends on the amount of video written, not just the number printed beside “megapixels.” Camera count, bitrate, recording duration and the selected mode all matter. Axis’s bitrate guidance explains how scene activity and video settings affect the stream. Treat a retention calculation as an estimate with visible assumptions, then confirm it after installation.

Your final buying checklist

  • Identify the required scene and useful detail at each mounting point.
  • Confirm power, connectivity and recording during relevant outages.
  • List the functions available without an optional subscription.
  • Verify camera, recorder, storage and accessory compatibility.
  • Check how to find, export and preserve an important clip.
  • Include all required equipment in the total cost.

After installation, walk through the relevant areas in daylight and darkness, retrieve the recordings and try exporting one. That practical check tells you whether the whole system performs the job you bought it to do. This guide explains selection and setup; it does not represent a hands-on ranking of individual cameras.
