Choose between these cameras by deciding when you want to frame the shot. A conventional action-camera workflow asks you to point the camera before recording. A 360 workflow captures the surrounding scene so you can choose a view later. That extra flexibility changes editing, storage and lens-care requirements. It is more useful than a direct comparison between the largest resolution numbers on the boxes.
The selected DJI package is the Osmo Action 5 Pro Standard Combo with one battery. The selected Insta360 package is the X4 Standard bundle without a microSD card. Neither should be described as an adventure kit containing every mount, spare battery or accessory you may need.

Why 8K and 4K are not directly comparable here
The X4’s 8K 360 image covers the whole sphere. When you choose a smaller view from it, you are using only part of that recorded image. You should not promise an 8K flat final video from every reframed angle. Judge the exported shot at the framing and resolution you actually intend to publish.
The Action 5 Pro’s high frame-rate modes instead address motion within a conventional frame. Whether that helps depends on the scene and the editing plan. A higher setting can bring additional storage and processing demands without improving a static clip. Special tracking modes also have their own limits; do not assume every headline feature operates together at the maximum resolution and frame rate.
Where conventional capture is a good fit
Consider the DJI when you know the direction of the action and prefer a more direct path from recording to an ordinary video clip. Before attaching it permanently, check the view from the actual mount. A camera aligned perfectly on a table may point too far down when you sit on a bicycle or too far up when attached to a chest harness.
The camera’s published water rating has conditions. DJI specifies 20 m without a case and 60 m with its waterproof case, with closures and lens protection correctly secured; its guidance recommends a case for some prolonged or high-impact water use. Treat sealing, accessory instructions and activity suitability as part of preparation, not as an assumption from the word waterproof.
Where 360 capture earns its editing work
Consider the X4 when choosing the view afterward solves a real problem: you cannot confidently point toward the subject throughout a scene, or you want several framings from one take. Plan time to review and reframe footage in a supported workflow. Insta360’s editing documentation is a useful starting point for that decision.
Check your phone or computer before buying around an editing feature. A successful sample should include recording, transfer, reframing and export. Handle both lenses carefully and inspect the actual selected bundle for guards and other protection. A selfie stick, mounting system or spare card should enter the budget only after you confirm whether it is supplied and needed.
Choose a complete recording day
Build the budget around a day you can describe: the mount, memory, charging opportunity, expected editing time and final output. Manufacturer battery runtimes use particular modes and conditions; they are not a guarantee for your preferred high-resolution setting. The storage calculator can help with an estimate once you know the actual bitrate.
Choose the DJI workflow when deliberate framing and straightforward conventional clips fit the activity. Choose the X4 workflow when flexible reframing is valuable enough to justify the extra handling and editing. Whichever you choose, inspect a short exported clip before an important outing. Confirm the horizon, framing, sound and readable detail in the finished file, not only on the camera’s screen.
