Klein ET16 Android borescope: verify the phone and access route before the inspection

The Klein Tools ET16 is a visible-light borescope for inspecting an accessible space with a compatible Android device. Its camera sits at the end of a gooseneck cable. It is worth considering when your question concerns a visible detail behind an obstruction and you have a safe physical route to the target.

The phone is an essential part of the purchase

Confirm Android OTG support, the physical connection and compatibility with the Klein ET16 application before ordering. A connector fitting the phone is not enough. If the camera is needed for a particular inspection date, complete a connection, capture and file-save test beforehand.

The camera uses power from the attached device. Include phone charge and the practical handling of the connected setup in your preparation. Protect the phone and connection from the inspection environment; the camera head’s ingress rating does not apply automatically to the complete assembly.

Reach is more than cable length

A ten-foot cable may provide useful reach, but it does not guarantee that the camera can pass every bend or face the subject at the end. Describe the access route and the direction of the detail you need to see. A reachable space can still be difficult to illuminate or interpret.

Klein’s current page inconsistently lists an 8 mm and 9 mm camera-head diameter. We therefore do not promise passage through an 8 mm opening. Seek confirmation if a tight clearance is central to the purchase; that dimension could change whether the tool is useful at all.

Choose it for visible evidence

The ET16 can support a visual inspection, not a thermal one. It is not a substitute for an instrument measuring surface-temperature patterns. Conversely, a thermal camera cannot replace a probe when the question requires seeing an accessible hidden detail directly.

Plan to save both the close view and enough context to explain where it came from. Move deliberately, keep track of orientation and adjust illumination as needed. If a detail remains unclear, record the uncertainty instead of turning an ambiguous image into a confident conclusion.

Before ordering and before use

Verify the exact ET16 model, supported phone and app, required clearance and safe access. Follow the equipment instructions, keep probes away from energized equipment and moving machinery, and do not force a cable or opening. This product is not intended for medical use.

For a suitable job, the useful advantage is a camera that can be positioned where your unaided view cannot reach. Its value depends on the whole route from access to saved image. Test that sequence, export a readable file and note what the observation can and cannot establish before relying on it for a decision.
